Customer challenge

vPS is a manufacturer of cold-rolled strip steel, meeting the highest quality standards available. With production and distribution companies in Austria, Sweden and the United States as well as sales subsidiaries in the United States, China, Spain and Mexico. vPS primarily supplies raw materials that customers then refine. There are approximately 2,500 active products produced in 120 production machines. voestalpine Precision Strip employs 1200 people and exports products for over 270 Mio € to over 80 countries. To maintain and improve both product delivery and production flexibility, management recognized a need to streamline their processes, focusing on three main areas: 1) Short lead time from request to delivery 2) Flexibility in production 3) Maintaining high product quality The primary challenges were highly complex and needed a new approach to be able to deliver on the three focus areas.

Project goals

vPS and NTI worked together on mapping current processes and wishes, ending up with prioritized project goals and a step-by-step plan. The overall project goal: to digitally integrate and automate machine documentation workflows, being able to take more orders and to switch production for new products faster. It derived other sub-goals; for example, access to correct and updated machine documentation in one place, for all and standardization of design and machine item, BOM and spare parts structure.

Solution

Following initial solution review and business needs, the complete solution deployed is based on Autodesk Product Design & Manufacturing Collection, Vault Professional and Fusion 360 Manage, supported by NTI TOOLS and 3rd party integration software. Other systems like SAP and Engineering Base are also digitally connecting data. The solution was divided into different steps of implementation: 1) Design standardization (CAD) 2) Engineering data management (PDM) 3) Machine documentation and factory overview (PLM) By implementing and preparing for next steps, the innovative solution provided both faster user adoption and more efficient data management capabilities, giving value and optimization from day one.

Business outcome

Having implemented an integrated solution, a machine ‘digital-twin’ with machine overview, items, documentation and released data, vPS can now handle more orders and can switch production for new products faster without the need for more resources. Also, they have added more depth and detail to their work at a fraction of the cost from their previous workflows, giving new options and opportunities to factory optimization, machine configurations, quality management, supplier integration and more.
