Sustainability Starts at VK Architects & Engineering in the Early Design Phase

Customer challenge

VK Architects & Engineers has been a leading design and engineering consultancy for over 65 years. They offer architectural, engineering and infrastructure design solutions in four markets: Healthcare, Buildings, Industry and Infrastructure. Recently, they were looking for a good solution to enable their flexible teams to work better together, with all data accessible to everyone. VK's design teams follow a fairly classical process: they use Autodesk Revit and each designer has his own team space. The exchange of design data could be much better and more structured, but they are designers and not process managers. Since all the modelling users were already working with Autodesk BIM 360, including Revit Cloud Worksharing and Design Collaboration, they partnered with Arkance Systems to find a solution within this ecosystem.

Project goals

As a leading company, VK wants to be a pioneer in its sector. Their main mission is therefore to focus on architectural building projects in which people and the environment take central stage. In the context of the life cycle of a building, 'sustainable impact' and 'performance' of the building are given the highest priority. This sustainability is expressed from the earliest design stage, where they try to detect as many issues as possible quickly. In this way, they avoid waste, higher costs and frustration among project staff due to longer construction periods. The way VK sets up and coordinates projects is also as efficient as possible. In less than one hour, they can detect bottlenecks in the early design phase and show their impact on the bills of quantities, design and budget.

Solution

Arkance Systems searched in partnership with VK for sustainable and appropriate solutions. A digital transition is a process of technology, workflow and people. An essential step in this process starts with avoiding construction errors. This can be done by properly aligning the design process with reality through analyses on the digital models. For this, Arkance Systems and VK had to look for a cloud solution in a Common Data Environment, which could be worked on together and remotely. Arkance Systems analysed VK's workflow and, together with Autodesk, devised a test phase to fine-tune everything. After some adjustments and short training sessions, Arkance Systems soon proposed a concrete solution, based on the Autodesk Construction Cloud and its BIM 360 Collaborate module, which was successfully implemented by VK.

Business outcome

Finally, they speak the same language at VK Architects & Engineers. From the early design stage, they let Autodesk's BIM 360 Model Coordination do the work. Instead of exporting files and losing time, the VK staff can now detect clashes live on the model. The communication between all designers is also much smoother. Every designer who works with Autodesk BIM 360 can automatically validate their work through Model Coordination and adjust it if necessary, whenever and wherever they want.

Conclusion

Ann Van den Borre (BIM Manager VK Architects & Engineers): "Working with a committed partner like Arkance Systems, who quickly understands the needs of our company, is a big plus. This latest project highlights our partnership once again. Arkance Systems has known our project approach for many years. Together with their follow-up of innovative technologies and software solutions, we always achieve quick results, which we then follow up and optimise together."

BIM to the Construction Site Along With BIM Quality Management

"Making our engineers aware of what they are doing was the main reason for me to implement BIM 360 Build at PENDIK Projects," says Spencer Hellegering, head of the Projects department at the Veenendaal-based installer. Originally founded in 2006, PENDIK is a service company. With around 8,000 to 10,000 service contracts, mainly through housing associations and property managers, PENDIK was particularly strong in responding to complaints and reports. Setting up a Projects Department within an originally service-oriented company was quite a challenge. Hellegering: "The working method of a service company is very different. As a service company, you need different knowledge of installation technology than you do for new construction and renovation projects. The staff have to start thinking differently. We used to go to a leak and fix it. But now we have to make sure it doesn't leak!" PENDIK now employs around 40 people, 20 of whom work in the Projects Department.

Gare Maritime as a Showpiece of Study Techniques with Focus on Sustainability

Boydens Engineering is a construction engineering and design office active in the conceptualisation, design and control of technical building installations. They explicitly and with a great sense of responsibility strive for sustainable and energy-neutral buildings. Kurt Corvers, operational director and partner at Boydens Engineering, explains how his engineering office converts concepts into sustainable designs and how Arkance Systems helps them do so. Their latest showpiece is the office space 'Gare Maritime' on the Brussels site of Tour & Taxis.

Communication on site via BIM 360

As one of the largest construction companies in Flanders, MBG stands out for its sense of innovation. In order to optimise their complex Design and Build projects, MBG is investing heavily in the digitisation of their building sites. With Autodesk BIM 360, they have a powerful tool that makes 'bimming' on the building site more accessible and easier. In 2018, the then project manager Nelis Van Loock was appointed BIM Coordinator to streamline everything and put the BIM 360 platform into practice on the site.
