Stora Enso Develop Sustainable Biocomposites with Autodesk Moldflow

Stora Enso Develop Sustainable Biocomposites with Autodesk Moldflow

Customer challenge

Stora Enso realized early on the need to create sustainable businesses and therefore began early to think innovatively and develop new and more sustainable materials such as biocomposites as replacements for traditional plastics. One of the challenges was to keep down the customer's time and cost of changing materials. Many customers lacked the knowledge and the ability to perform simulations and to develop physical prototypes often became too expensive. Thus, they chose to continue with current materials, despite the fact that there were great environmental benefits from changing. Stora Enso, Circular Solutions therefore realized the need to take forward material data on biocomposites in order to be able to perform good simulations and convince the market to dare to use alternative materials.

Project goals

The goals for the project were: 1) Ensure that Stora Enso themselves have the knowledge and the software/ products /platforms to be able to provide fast and high-quality technical support to their customers. 2) Ensure the required technical skills and software to be able to compare data from the physical tests with the digital simulations and that the results are consistent.

Solution

The project started with a pilot project together with Stora Enso, NTI Sweden AB and an external consultant company to ensure that the suggested solution would meet the demands from Stora Enso. After the initial pilot phase, the conclusion was that the suggested solution was the right solution and Stora Enso decided to invest in Autodesk Moldflow Insight Standard. NTIs Consultancy Team provided Stora Enso with tailored training and support to ensure fast and easy commissioning of the new solution. The next step is to expand to Fusion 360 to be able to do generate easier design changes.

Business outcome

For Stora Enso, the investment has meant a better service to new customers and a more solid material understanding on the part of most employees. With the help of Autodesk Moldflow, you get an insight into how material behaves during and after a part has been injection molded. It also enables you to give your customers a completely different type of technical support than before.

Conclusion

Stora Enso sees positive effects of the investment. With Autodesk Moldflow, they can now verify that theory and reality correspond, which leads to a better and faster customer dialogue.
