SUCCESS STORY

Pollmann increases efficiency with Autodesk Moldflow

Customer Challenge

Increasingly complex component geometries and manufacturing processes require the use of simulation tools. Increasing cost pressure and shorter throughput times also require tools that increase efficiency. That's why Pollmann, a specialist in the development and series production of highly complex conductive assemblies in a metal-plastic composite, needed a software solution precisely for this purpose.

Project Goals

An example of this challenge is a curved and torded rack for a belt bringer from a German premium brand. This placed very high demands on tool design and production. A coordination or correction of the mold inserts was not feasible due to the component geometry and requirements. Compliance with the required drawing tolerances would only have been achieved by remanufacturing the moulding inserts. However, this was not possible due to the resulting costs and postponements. Therefore, the tool-falling parts had to meet the drawing requirements right from the start.

Solution

That's why our team at Westcam Datentechnik decided to purchase and implement Autodesk Moldflow at Pollmann. With the help of the distortion calculation and the resulting CAD data held against it, distortion-optimized CAD data of the rack of the tool design could be made available in just a few steps. With this data as a basis, an injection moulding tool was designed and manufactured. A subsequent correction of the complex formative inserts could thus be avoided. The drawing specifications could already be fulfilled with the initial production of the molding parts.

Business Outcome

It is also advantageous that up to 3 simulations can run in parallel and thus several variants can be calculated simultaneously. The graphical representation of the cooling behavior clearly shows in which areas the pressure is effective. Material accumulations are also visualized very well. Another important feature is the calculation of tool cooling, which is used to check existing cooling systems or to design cooling systems for new tools.

Conclusion

We have been using Moldflow for over a decade. Many of our customers require a simulation of the components already in the course of the inquiry. In addition, by using Moldflow in the development phase, we have the opportunity to optimize the components together with our customers. Our support at Westcam is excellent and the cooperation with us is uncomplicated, fast and takes place with a competent contact person.
