Machine Shop Outgrows Their Current Facility Using Autodesk Products

Customer challenge

3D Design and Manufacturing is a family-owned and operated facility that’s been in business for 15 years. 3D’s work mainly consists of 3 Axis milling and sheet metal fabrication. Working through production jobs with high quantity part runs and rushed jobs are their specialty in the machining space. Working in an environment that is ever changing, 3D needed a versatile product that worked in all areas of their business, and that’s where Automated Solutions (ASI) and 3D start their relationship almost 20 years ago. Automated Solutions Inc. is an Autodesk Solution Provider and Design & Make specialized partner who has been in the software business for over 30 years. Early on, FeatureCAM was a clear winner for 3D because of its ease of use and ability to get toolpath on a part extremely quick over its competitors. ASI has worked through many stages of growth with 3D: new machine purchases, complete overhauls to existing post processors and machine shop work that needed to be completed.

Project goals

Long term goals for 3D Design include: 1) Acquire a bigger facility for more machines to handle all production work in house 2) Work towards 5 Axis machining capabilities 3) Continue to grow the company through customer acquisition and contract work

Solution

3D has always run an extremely organized, tight nit operation. This has been an anchoring point for their success when it comes to rushed work or when work must be outsourced too meet customer deadlines. While 3D has been building a brand-new facility to meet all their production needs, ASI has been able to take on projects that aren’t able to be completed while this transition period is happening. With this new manufacturing facility, new machines that have multi-axis capabilities will be on 3D’s radar. New machines mean more collaboration between 3D and ASI with high echelon training, POST modifications and continued phone support to provide support whenever it is needed. Training doesn’t stop with ever evolving businesses like 3D. With the new machines will also come new employees who require training on the new machines, but also training in their CAM software to program.

Business outcome

3D Design and Manufacture has been able to accomplish their goal of expanding their shop into a brand-new facility that was purpose built and designed for their needs. Moving all operations to this new manufacturing space will allow for the growth they need and for their goals to be limitless. With the added space comes the added difficulty of new machines, new employees and new contracts - a challenge they are more than capable of handling. ASI is eager and willing to help at every turn in this new journey of growth. Our longtime customer and friends at 3D Design and Manufacture are the example of when having the right tools, people and work ethic, anything is possible!

Conclusion

“I can say without question my experience with ASI has been a very positive one and as we grow we will continue forward. ASI is a valuable partner who has supported us for many years. Their team has gone over and above the normal expectations. They have been there for us every time we call and have made themselves available after hours on many occasions. Throughout my network of shop owners in Virginia, John and his team are well respected. They understand the needs of all types of shops large and small. They just get it.” Dave Modlin Owner of 3D Design and Manufacturing
