Kenect Apartment Tower
Customer Challenge
UEB/Katerra needed to simulate the building’s construction in a 3D environment to get coordinated layouts of the MEP and FP systems to the Architectural and Structural design team. The challenge was construction was ongoing while the BIM Coordination process took place. The main priority was to get accurate concrete penetrations located on-site ahead of the concrete pouring schedule. An added benefit was to actually verify the engineer’s design and confirm feasibility or propose a solution.
Project Goals
UEB/Katerra had the following priority project goals: 1) Collaboratively coordinate the MEP and FP systems of a 24-story mixed-use building while constructing the building and 2) Simulate the building's construction in a 3D environment to verify the engineer's design and confirm feasibility
Solution
Setting up ground rules for coordination using a BEP, we put together a collaborative process of modeling using Autodesk Revit, and BIM Coordination combining all trade’s models with Autodesk Navisworks. Through good communication and being able to show the added value of the process for all stakeholders, we were able to validate the design, come up with alternatives, solve construction problems before they actually occurred, and end up with a 3D coordination model for the whole building.
Business Outcome
Key business outcomes included being able to save construction time and costs by “testing” the design intent of all trades involved in a 3D environment and enhancing communication of all stakeholders through a collaborative process resulting in fewer RFIs and faster response time.
Conclusion
There’s always room for improvement and innovation when it comes to facing new clients with different needs. The Autodesk tools have proven to be flexible and easy to interact with, giving AEC Resource the opportunity to quickly overcome issues and work out solutions.
