Industry Leader Steps Into New Market

Industry Leader Steps Into New Market

Customer challenge

Virtex is an industry leading contract manufacturer. The Mid-Atlantic Division of Virtex not only manufactures electronic components but completes turnkey systems. These complex systems include both electronic and mechanical components. Virtex Mid-Atlantic perceived a market opportunity to add 5 axis machining to the capabilities of the division and increase the complexity of mechanical parts produced. To assist in this new vision, Automated Solutions (ASI) was called in to discuss options for their path moving forward. Automated Solutions Inc. is an Autodesk Solution Provider and CAM specialized partner in the Digital Manufacturing Group who has been in the software business for over 30 years. After meeting with Virtex and analyzing a large potential project, the Autodesk FeatureCAM software was a perfect fit for the path moving forward.

Project goals

1) Acquire CNC machines with 5 axis capabilities. 2) Acquire CAM software capable of handling complex parts in the 5 Axis workspace. 3) Receive training from Automated Solutions (ASI) with on-site training for FeatureCAM.

Solution

Virtex decided on purchasing an Okuma 5 axis vertical machining center to manufacture extremely complex and tight tolerance parts. This combination of machine and software was used to make some extremely complicated assemblies for a top tier aerospace customer. ASI went on to train four engineers from Virtex to be able to maximize the potential of the 5 axis. The training progressed from basic 2.5D features to 5 Axis positional programming techniques. The team quickly mastered all the course information and was ready to be put to the test of real-world programming. For this new high-end machine, ASI developed a custom Post Processor to meet the project requirements. The ASI support team was frequently available on site to help streamline the post processor. ASI also implemented custom tool cribs and holders for accurate simulation to avoid machining issues or crashes.

Business outcome

Virtex was not only able to complete their machining contract for this top-level Aerospace customer on time, but they have also since then secured contracts from other high-level customers. These new contracts are accelerating growth and employment in the Shenandoah Valley at this facility.

Conclusion

"ASI has always been a local partner that I could count on. The team’s level of skill and dedication will continue to be what makes them extremely successful. ASI also continues to grow and adapt to the changing technology to ensure they can meet all necessary expectations." Walter J Carter Jr General Manager, Virtex VA

Machine Shop Outgrows Their Current Facility Using Autodesk Products

3D Design and Manufacturing is a family-owned and operated facility that’s been in business for 15 years. 3D’s work mainly consists of 3 Axis milling and sheet metal fabrication. Working through production jobs with high quantity part runs and rushed jobs are their specialty in the machining space. Working in an environment that is ever changing, 3D needed a versatile product that worked in all areas of their business, and that’s where Automated Solutions (ASI) and 3D start their relationship almost 20 years ago. Automated Solutions Inc. is an Autodesk Solution Provider and Design & Make specialized partner who has been in the software business for over 30 years. Early on, FeatureCAM was a clear winner for 3D because of its ease of use and ability to get toolpath on a part extremely quick over its competitors. ASI has worked through many stages of growth with 3D: new machine purchases, complete overhauls to existing post processors and machine shop work that needed to be completed.
