How Fusion 360 and the Machining Extension Improved Lead Time and Productivity at Hein & Sønner A/S

How Fusion 360 and the Machining Extension Improved Lead Time and Productivity at Hein & Sønner A/S

Customer challenge

Hein & Sønner, founded in 1878, are specialists in turning and milling operations in complex middle size parts delivering high accuracy quality products to the wind power and offshore industry. To drive business growth Hein & Sønner A/S are constantly focusing on developing the company through new investments in digital solutions to reduce manual CNC programming time, improve production capacity and lead time to meet customers’ needs.

Project goals

“As we were programming CNC machines manually, we were keen on going digital to automate processes and eliminate errors caused by manual work processes to deliver high quality parts to the agreed time and to accommodate urgent and complex needs,” elaborates Kurt Stilling, Production Director at Hein & Sønner A/S. Going ahead, Hein & Sønner A/S worked closely together with NTI A/S to analyze and get an overview of business processes, discuss return of investment, and identify a future-proof CAM solution to bring Hein & Sønner A/S to the next level on their digital journey.

Solution

Hein & Sønner migrated to Autodesk Fusion 360 with the Machining Extension to boost the core CAM capabilities of Fusion 360 gaining access to advanced 3- and 5-axis strategies, toolpath optimization, and process automation. “Due to my former involvement in Mazak, the world-leading machine toolmaker, I never doubted that Fusion 360 and the Machining Extension was the most suitable choice for Hein & Sønner A/S,” explains Kurt Stilling. Besides technical support during the implementation, Hein & Sønner A/S also received training to utilize the platform in the most optimal manner.

Business outcome

Only four (4) working days were dedicated to move Hein & Sønner A/S to a digital CAM platform consisting of Autodesk Fusion 360 and the Machining Extension. Since implementation, the outcome has been of great value for the entire organization. Hence, Hein & Sønner A/S has reduced the number of errors caused by previous manual work processes and improved programming and calculation time leading to improved productivity, lead time and traceability.

Conclusion

“The fact that our users today are programming via Fusion 360 and the Machining Extension automating CNC machining workflows to reduce programming time and remove repetitive tasks, not only enables Hein & Sønner A/S to work more efficiently, but also ensures that we can apply advanced machining strategies to improve the performance of your CNC machines and producer higher-quality parts,” concludes Kurt Stilling.
