Global Manufacturer Improves Business Process with Autodesk

Global Manufacturer Improves Business Process with Autodesk

Customer challenge

Amsted Rail, Brenco Division (https://www.amstedrail.com), the world’s leading manufacturer of undercarriage and end-of-railcar components, was using a change management process like many manufacturing companies – heavily driven and managed by engineering, somewhat manual, and sometimes inconsistent based on the content of the change. This placed a heavy burden on the engineering division to ensure changes were fully executed since, like most manufacturing organizations, they were responsible for defining much of the content for the change. An improved process was necessary.

Project goals

Amsted approached Synergis Engineering Design Solutions for recommendations on how different tools could be leveraged to improve their change management process. During initial analysis and discussion, the following goals were established: 1) Move from a somewhat manual process to an electronic process that provided accurate traceability and status at all times in a single, easy-to-use location. 2) Increase collaboration across business units and departments by providing direct access and ability to contribute as a change moves through the workflow. 3) Develop a process with approvals and tasks, automatically assigned and defined based on the content of each change order.

Solution

When accounting for all the variables presented, and the end goals of Amsted Rail, the recommendation was made to implement the Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage product lifecycle management (PLM) solution to control their entire change process. To implement Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage, an integration with Autodesk Vault was recommended and implemented. This allowed the related design files to remain stored on premise in Vault but be managed by the Fusion 360 Manage change process.

Business outcome

Upon successful completion of the project a new process was established for Amsted to fully manage their change process from start to finish with all necessary departments directly participating. The inclusion of additional metadata, approval assignments, notifications, and task assignments, configured to be automatically defined based on the change order content, allowed for a dramatically improved change process with complete status traceability and greatly improved reporting.

Conclusion

The expert guidance of Synergis Engineering Design Solutions enabled Amsted to greatly improve their change management process. The success of the PLM implementation has expanded well beyond change management to include several quality processes, a supplier approval process, a general request process, quality document change management and the related training processes, and more. Using Autodesk Fusion 360 Manage across such a broad expanse of business processes has really allowed Amsted to capitalize on their investment and improve business processes across the entire organization.

C&D Turns to Synergis for Process Improvement Guidance After Acquisition

For more than 100 years, C&D Technologies, Inc (“C&D”) has been manufacturing and supporting innovative systems for the conversion and storage of electrical power and delivering world-class power solutions for mission-critical industrial applications. Recently, C&D acquired Trojan Battery Company, LLC (“Trojan”), a leading manufacturer of deep-cycle Solar and Motive batteries. With the combination of both companies, it was discovered that they had different ways of handling design, data, and change management, that needed to be streamlined into a single, easy-to-adopt process.

Partnership Allows Manufacturer to Perform at Highest Level

The partnership between Rockland and Synergis began over ten years ago when Rockland needed to consolidate a variety of engineering and drafting platforms into one single package. Rockland Manufacturing was comprised of teammates from various industries and backgrounds, each with their own preferences for CAD and analysis tools. As Rockland grew, their engineering resources became segregated and limited to their abilities in the CAD platform they were trained in. Synergis first partnered with Rockland over ten years ago to upgrade and install Autodesk Inventor and Vault Basic on all engineering computers and included training the entire Rockland engineering team on Autodesk Inventor and Vault best practices. Over the years Synergis has continuously supported Rockland with setup and maintenance of current software, file storage, and training.
