SUCCESS STORY

Engineering New Solutions for WSB

Customer Challenge

WSB is a civil engineering firm based in Twin Cities, Minnesota. They had been challenged with a new renewable-energy project for a solar farm. The solar panels needed to be placed at least 3 feet above the ground, but no more than 5 feet, so part of the design process was analyzing whether or not that condition was true, and whether or not that tolerance had been met. The challenging part was designing corrective grading when it wasn't within tolerance, since that can't be done dynamically.

Project Goals

The project goal was to develop a solution that would enable WSB to dynamically build grading models to satisfy the client requirements for the solar farm project.

Solution

The backbone of the design program at WSB has been Autodesk Civil 3D, but for the solar farm challenge, they decided it might be worthwhile to leverage computational design in order to solve the problem in a dynamic format. WSB contacted U.S. CAD to evaluate potential solutions, and U.S. CAD was able to develop a solution that took WSB through the computational design process allowing them to dynamically build grading models that achieved the solution required by the client.

Business Outcome

WSB has since expanded its Autodesk product usage from Civil 3D to additional products within the Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection including BIM 360, Navisworks, Plant 3D, and InfraWorks. These tools have enhanced their abilities in the way of collaboration, visualization, stakeholder feedback, and more, ultimately leading to increased client satisfaction.

Conclusion

"U.S. CAD has been really beneficial to us in a lot of ways. Probably most importantly to me, they offer unparalleled technical support. Additionally, they've got a wonderful Customer Success program that helps us plan long-range, it helps us facilitate better conversations with U.S. CAD about potential solutions that we haven't looked at yet, and that's been really valuable." - Jason Kreger, Civil 3D CAD Manager, WSB
