Capturing the Spirit of the World Cup using Autodesk Flame and Maya

Capturing the Spirit of the World Cup using Autodesk Flame and Maya

Customer challenge

JAMM is an independently owned, artist-driven visual effects studio known for delivering exceptional creative. Most recently, the team worked on a commercial for FOX Sports to promote the US men's national team at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. There was a very short turnaround. First they shot the players on an empty field in Austin, Texas, and then they had to create the background objects, including the stadium and crowd. There was not enough time to have the numbers printed on the player’s jerseys in the commercial, so they had to add those via Autodesk Flame.

Project goals

The team at JAMM had a 2 week schedule with 6-7 stadium shots, along with basic cleanup and outdoor snow and North Pole comps. And, they had to make the stadium scenes look like Qatar.

Solution

The solution was to use Autodesk Flame and Maya. For the jersey numbers and names, they used motion vector tracking to stick the graphics to the flowing fabric. JAMM also used camera projections for smoke, atmosphere and confetti.

CineSys provided Autodesk Flame, Sapphire Sparks and OpenFX for the project. They also supplied Flame workstations for the extra artists that were brought in.

Business outcome

The clients were very pleased with the project and you can see the commercial everywhere with the World Cup games happening right now.

Conclusion

The fast turnaround for comp completion and the vision of a digital stadium and background made the project unique and impactful.

"We had to create the energy and capture the spirit of the World Cup before it even happened." -Patrick Munoz, VFX Supervisor and Lead Flame Artist, JAMM

The Vanity Creates CG Environment for Canada Life

This project was to create a commercial for the insurance and financial services company Canada Life. Other than creating the CG environment itself, some of the challenges faced involved the creative and technical issues on set. Autodesk Maya was used for pre-viz to reveal the characters and their placement in space. All in all, there were 20 different passes, each with 1,000 frames, which meant 20,000 frames of footage! There was a lot of rotoscoping and some of it in slow motion.

Visual Effects for HBO Series: "The Plot Against America"

“The Plot Against America” is based on the 2004 novel of the same name, written by Philip Roth, taking place during the World War II in New Jersey. Most of the work required by LVLY involved keeping everything correct in terms of reflecting that time period. The VFX Artists removed non-period items from the live action shots, such as traffic signals, air conditioners and non-period people, signage and cars in the background. They also took on a couple of large day-for-night sequences.
