CAM Implementation

CAM Implementation

Customer challenge

MASAM - specialized in machining of complex parts and precise metal products manufacturing - needed to increase productivity of his existing CAM solution. As this company competes in a demanding industry (aerospace, automotive, space), they wanted to manufacture more precise products, faster and with less collisions.

Project goals

The main objective of MASAM was to create advanced tools for precise Autodesk CAM in aerospace industry, with 2 sub-goals in mind: - Optimization of machining, milling and turning strategies. - Implementation of 5-axis machining with optimal post-processing tools.

Solution

MASAM and Arkance Systems deployed a full CAM solution including custom post-processors with the ability to machine with precision of one thousandth of a millimeter. Replacing a former competitive CAM software, the base of the delivered solution was Autodesk PowerMill and FeatureCAM for 2D and 3D machining, including 5-axis machining. These tools were customized for the manufacturing processes used by this customer. PowerMill was selected because it respects the highest security standard, it also offers an exceptional quality of machined surfaces thanks to wide possibilities of optional strategies and last but not least, it is simple to use and allow high speed programming and CNC exporting. On top of this solution, Autodesk Fusion 360 was chosen as a very efficient affordable cloud solution to access data from anywhere, to access added-value technologies (Manufacturing Extension, Generative Design, topological optimization, etc.) and benefits from high speed calculation capabilities.

Business outcome

The machining productivity increased because of customized, fine-tuned post-processors. The implementation of Autodesk PowerMill and Autodesk FeatureCAM, adapted to customer’s process was an exit thanks to individual in-person consulting on site, individual training and post-processor customization. As a result, MASAM is now able to process more precise machining of detailed parts and the related manufacturing process time was cut by 50%.

Conclusion

Thanks to a good knowledge of the machining processes and post-processor options, the customer is now able to offer first-class tools for space and aerospace industry players, like Airbus, Embraer and ESA. On top of the software and the custom postprocessors development, MASAM beneficiated from tailored CAM training programs provided onsite by Arkance Systems together with technical support before and after the implementation. BIM to the Construction Site Along With BIM Quality Management

"Making our engineers aware of what they are doing was the main reason for me to implement BIM 360 Build at PENDIK Projects," says Spencer Hellegering, head of the Projects department at the Veenendaal-based installer. Originally founded in 2006, PENDIK is a service company. With around 8,000 to 10,000 service contracts, mainly through housing associations and property managers, PENDIK was particularly strong in responding to complaints and reports. Setting up a Projects Department within an originally service-oriented company was quite a challenge. Hellegering: "The working method of a service company is very different. As a service company, you need different knowledge of installation technology than you do for new construction and renovation projects. The staff have to start thinking differently. We used to go to a leak and fix it. But now we have to make sure it doesn't leak!" PENDIK now employs around 40 people, 20 of whom work in the Projects Department.

Gare Maritime as a Showpiece of Study Techniques with Focus on Sustainability

Boydens Engineering is a construction engineering and design office active in the conceptualisation, design and control of technical building installations. They explicitly and with a great sense of responsibility strive for sustainable and energy-neutral buildings. Kurt Corvers, operational director and partner at Boydens Engineering, explains how his engineering office converts concepts into sustainable designs and how Arkance Systems helps them do so. Their latest showpiece is the office space 'Gare Maritime' on the Brussels site of Tour & Taxis.

Communication on site via BIM 360

As one of the largest construction companies in Flanders, MBG stands out for its sense of innovation. In order to optimise their complex Design and Build projects, MBG is investing heavily in the digitisation of their building sites. With Autodesk BIM 360, they have a powerful tool that makes 'bimming' on the building site more accessible and easier. In 2018, the then project manager Nelis Van Loock was appointed BIM Coordinator to streamline everything and put the BIM 360 platform into practice on the site.
