BOM Management

BOM Management

Customer challenge

Orangeworks is specialized in designing and realizing equipment for the food processing industry: from production and storage solutions up to and including complete production lines. Each bill of materials is unique which results in a challenge during the purchasing and production process. In every design phase or release cycle, a new or updated parts list needs to be submitted to the ERP system. As a result, long lead items are pushed to the ERP system relatively late, only when engineers have finished their design. As a result, for example, the company ordered long lead items relatively late. They also really wanted their own production to get started at an earlier stage. Once the Engineering Bill of Material is released, their work planners have to schedule manufacturing operations and sequence for a production order. This took a lot of time and had to be better, faster and free of errors.

Project goals

The following priority project goals were identified: > Time-saving on Pre-production process > Less manual work / less mistakes > From E(ngineering) BOM to M(anufacturing)BOM > Work-activities and routings are set by experts and re-used > No need for access to high-cost ERP system > Re-use data for cost calculation (parts, material and work) > To work more efficiently > Faster design process > Less failure costs

Solution

The following Autodesk Solutions and Arkance Systems services were deployed: > Autodesk Inventor for the design process equipment and process flow in the food industry. > Autodesk Vault Professional for ITEM BOM Management, Revision and Lifecycle Management. > Add-on for Inventor and Vault Professional that enables you to enrich the engineering 3D model (automated by feature recognition) with manufacturing methods and routings to include into the Bill of Material. > Autodesk Vault Publisher for automating repetitive tasks like the publishing of PDF/STP/DXF used by production and purchase.

Business outcome

The following primary business outcomes resulted from the solution and services deployed: > The Bill of Material / Item List is now exported to the ERP system by the Business Connector. > Time-savings have been identified on the pre-production process. > Less manual work / less mistakes. > From E(ngineering) BOM to M(anufacturing) BOM. > Work-activities and routings are set by experts and re-used. > No need for access to a high-cost ERP system. > Re-use data for cost calculation (parts, material and work). > Work is completed more efficiently, smarter and with secured processes in the systems. > Information used is richer than before, as the systems contain more knowledge.

Conclusion

Arkance Systems helps companies in the manufacturing industry to work smart, fast and cost-effectively. Our focus always lies on the design and production process. A SMART 3D-model forms the basis of improvements, not only in design and manufacturing, but also in the commercial process and in service and maintenance. Our customers think along with us in our process and have their people engaged throughout. Our project manager from Arkance Systems is a mechanical engineer with an eye for the process. He knows what challenges there are in our industry and can translate them perfectly into a suitable solution.

BIM to the Construction Site Along With BIM Quality Management

"Making our engineers aware of what they are doing was the main reason for me to implement BIM 360 Build at PENDIK Projects," says Spencer Hellegering, head of the Projects department at the Veenendaal-based installer. Originally founded in 2006, PENDIK is a service company. With around 8,000 to 10,000 service contracts, mainly through housing associations and property managers, PENDIK was particularly strong in responding to complaints and reports. Setting up a Projects Department within an originally service-oriented company was quite a challenge. Hellegering: "The working method of a service company is very different. As a service company, you need different knowledge of installation technology than you do for new construction and renovation projects. The staff have to start thinking differently. We used to go to a leak and fix it. But now we have to make sure it doesn't leak!" PENDIK now employs around 40 people, 20 of whom work in the Projects Department.

Gare Maritime as a Showpiece of Study Techniques with Focus on Sustainability

Boydens Engineering is a construction engineering and design office active in the conceptualisation, design and control of technical building installations. They explicitly and with a great sense of responsibility strive for sustainable and energy-neutral buildings. Kurt Corvers, operational director and partner at Boydens Engineering, explains how his engineering office converts concepts into sustainable designs and how Arkance Systems helps them do so. Their latest showpiece is the office space 'Gare Maritime' on the Brussels site of Tour & Taxis.

Communication on site via BIM 360

As one of the largest construction companies in Flanders, MBG stands out for its sense of innovation. In order to optimise their complex Design and Build projects, MBG is investing heavily in the digitisation of their building sites. With Autodesk BIM 360, they have a powerful tool that makes 'bimming' on the building site more accessible and easier. In 2018, the then project manager Nelis Van Loock was appointed BIM Coordinator to streamline everything and put the BIM 360 platform into practice on the site.
