Better Infrastructure Development and Project Delivery through BIM and GIS Application

Better Infrastructure Development and Project Delivery through BIM and GIS Application

Customer challenge

Conventional 2D drawings are hard to be interpreted by laymen. Using 3D modelling in Autodesk InfraWorks 360 and GIS, we manage to model the existing site condition including the underground utilities. This allows the stakeholders to better visualize the design intent and the impact of the project to the local people. From the 3D BIM model generated, it allows stakeholders to see multiple design options and make better informed decision.

For the case of UTNM Resources Sdn Bhd, the original 2D designs created by the consultants have major social impact that required bigger land acquisitions, with more houses and buildings needed to be demolished. Through 3D BIM Models and the power of creating multiple design options easily, we managed to alter the designs to reduce the land required and reduce the number of houses needed to be demolished.

Project goals

Autodesk Solution Provider Progressive System Sdn Bhd are very helpful in helping to tackle technical inquiries. Through better support systems, we are able to deliver high quality projects, and help our stakeholders to reduce the social impact. Apart from that, it also reduced the cost of acquiring the land and the compensation to the building and home owners.

Solution

UTNM are now able to utilize most of the software in the Autodesk Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection through our experience as a former Autodesk Training Center. We are using most of the AEC Collection software namely Revit, Civil 3D, Infraworks 360, Navisworks Manage and also FormIt 360. Support from Progressive has allowed us to utilize most of the software collection and we look forward to start implementing Robot Structure in future projects with help from Progressive.

Business outcome

Clients today demand better project quality at competitive costs and to meet tight implementation schedules. With most of the projects getting more complicated, usage of BIM proved it can better provide high quality project delivery within a shorter period and with ease. This allowed us to reduce the overall cost, thus making us competitive in today’s market.

Progressive System has assisted us in utilizing the AEC Collection through technical sharing sessions. Usage of Civil 3D and InfraWorks allowed us to create multiple design options at ease and give the client better understanding through 3D modeling to make informed decisions. NavisWorks Manage allowed us to detect clashes between the components and avoid problems at the site. Apart from that, the 4D BIM Simulation in NavisWorks helps the client to monitor the project sequence and the construction.

Conclusion

Progressive always have technical sharing sessions to showcase what is new in the new version of the software. These sharing sessions gave us the ability to strategize and plan how to utilize the new features of the AEC Collection in our projects and throughout our organization.

Progressive also are helpful to answer technical inquiries about all Autodesk products.

BIM Collaborate PRO Brings Connected Design and Construction Team Closer

TSYR Industries Sdn Bhd research shows that Autodesk BIM 360 Collaborate Pro is new to Malaysia Local Industry. Not many expertise know how to manage and operate especially when come into real time project implementation. Especially the workflow of integration.

BIM Makes Effective Coordination

With a recent project with BIM requirement at construction stage, we are caught and were new to Building Information Modelling concept. Project principals requires the use of BIM tools for coordination purposes. It was a situation we have not anticipated before. Over the years, our design team are only using Autodesk AutoCAD for design and documentation. Autodesk 3DS Max for video walk-through with our customers. In BIM, different technology tools are required, and Progressive introduced us about Autodesk BIM and Autodesk Revit functionality. We did try-out Autodesk Revit and source the market for alternative solution. And we did finalize our decision with Autodesk Revit and the ease how Autodesk Revit can work with. The post- trainings and support we seek have given our team the confidence to work with Revit to develop our designs for the project.
