Transitioning to Autodesk Build

Customer Challenge

A Morton Thomas & Associates (AMT) is a multidisciplinary engineering and design consultancy headquartered in Rockville, MD, with 20 offices throughout the eastern US. AMT holds contracts with multiple states in the Mid-Atlantic region to provide construction engineering inspection and construction management of highway construction projects for each state’s respective Department of Transportation. As part of their contract requirements for their Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) contract, AMT had standardized on Autodesk PlanGrid for project and field management. When their current PlanGrid contract was up for renewal, AMT worked closely with CADD Microsystems and Autodesk to ensure that they procured the correct solution to meet their current project requirements and to ensure they had the right solution for the future, as they anticipate the potential future contract requirement changes with their DOT clients.

Project Goals

As CADD and AMT began discussions about their PlanGrid renewal, CADD performed discovery to understand what was important to AMT and their current and future business needs. AMT needed to continue to have access to PlanGrid as it is required for their contracts with VDOT. They also wanted to find a way to set themselves up with additional capabilities for future projects that would leverage the new unified platform of Autodesk Build, all while making a smart financial decision. They also wanted to ensure that any new solutions would be easy to access and use for their current PlanGrid users.

Solution

CADD recommended to AMT that they should continue to leverage PlanGrid for their existing projects, to ensure they are meeting the project requirements, but begin the process to train and transition users to Autodesk Build for their future projects. This solution would allow AMT legacy access to PlanGrid for their current projects and have access to Autodesk Build for future projects. AMT moved forward with purchasing licenses of Autodesk Build, including access to PlanGrid. To ensure adoption of Autodesk Build and a successful transition, the CADD consulting and customer success teams created an Adoption and Customer Success Plan for AMT. The initial phase of the Plan was to focus on the transition from PlanGrid to Autodesk Build by completing CADD’s onboarding program for Autodesk Build. As part of the onboarding program, it was imperative that AMT fully understood the power and capabilities of Autodesk Build and the new unified Construction Cloud platform.

Business Outcome

As a result of completing the Autodesk Build onboarding program, and completing phase I of the Customer Success Plan, AMT is now set up for success as they embark on using Autodesk Build on their first projects. CADD and AMT continue to work together on how to transition new projects, so they are prepared as their customers start to mandate Autodesk Build in the future. The next phase of the Customer Success Plan will be focused on CADD and AMT developing an enterprise-wide program, allowing AMT to leverage Autodesk Build for all construction engineering inspection and construction management projects, as a standard operating practice in the future.
