With a history that goes back to 1974, Wepuko Pahnke (WP) has thousands hand-drawn designs, and for years, the company used Microsoft applications for design file management.“Our products have long lifecycles, and we design them so they can be refurbished or rebuilt at a fraction of the cost of new ones,” said Roberto Millan-Ayala, Design Engineer, WP. During the years between when an original product was designed and a customer needs it rebuilt, WP personnel can change, their standards may be adjusted, designs might be updated, etc. If changes made to a part aren’t captured correctly, the process of locating the correct part number can be extremely time consuming. “To increase the efficiency of the refurbishing phase, we needed a technology solution that would allow us to store all design information in a central location and easily track changes,” said Roberto. NNS Digitizes Sheet Metal Shops with Custom Programming
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) founded in 1886 as the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Co., has built over 800 ships, both naval and commercial. Their facilities, which are located in Newport News, Virginia, cover more than 550 acres and are strategically located in one of the East Coast's finest harbors. They are the largest industrial employer in Virginia and the largest shipbuilding enterprise in the United States. The NNS team of expert craftsmen performed calculations, sketched out designs, transferred the designs to metal, and cut the metal all by hand. Impressed with NNS’s history and reputation, Anthony Ugoletti, joined the company right out of college from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown as a Manufacturing Engineer supporting the sheet metal shops. Although new to the shipbuilding industry, Anthony brought extensive experience with Autodesk software and he recognized the need to automate some of the manual shop floor processes to improve overall efficiencies and shop manufacturing throughput. He introduced the NNS sheet metal team to Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.

Founded in 1972, ASI has a long history of meeting client needs in an increasingly competitive space. Swinterton Delivers Value and Achieves ROI with Leica RTC360 Scanner
When renovating buildings, Swinerton starts with as-built measurements provided by clients. Because those drawings rarely include updates, Swinerton relied on their architects to manually measure spaces, put those measurements into Autodesk Revit, and provide PDFs of the information to the designers, who used them as the starting point for renovations.
Swinerton started getting laser scans of structures at the beginning of renovation projects using external companies to perform the scanning. “The laser scanners led to great improvements,” said Matt Zwetzig, VD&C Manager, Swinerton. “Measurements were gathered in a fraction of the time, teams knew they were working with accurate information, plans were created faster, correct parts were ordered the first time, and the parts fit as expected.”
With business growing and timelines shortening, Matt determined it was time to compare costs for hiring external providers versus purchasing a scanner and completing the work in house.

RRT Simplifies Machine Programming by Switching to InventorCAM
Historically, RRT has used Autodesk Inventor for new product development and to modify commercial items for use in tactical field environments. They managed the designs in Autodesk Vault, and when the designs were ready for manufacturing, the engineers would send the files to Mastercam. Using Mastercam, machinists would convert the toolpaths to G code to program the milling machines.
“The process worked, but since programming the mills was a manual process, it was time consuming, prone to errors, and tedious,” said Pat Gillespie, Vice President, RRT. “We decided to look into automating the process, so it would be faster and more accurate, and would free our team to do more interesting work.”

For many years, Superior Essex used an internally developed system for managing the test requests of new products and storing documents.
“Our products need to meet certain specifications, and an engineer within the company developed the system we used to submit the test requests, store results, and get the information needed to create reports that verify compliance,” said Rod Kron, Materials Analyst, Superior Essex. “As the company grew and the engineer who designed the system moved to another role, managing the system became a bit challenging.”
