Adjusting MEP Space Volumes in Revit

00:01

MARTHA HOLLOWELL ORCUTT: Adjusting MEP space volumes

00:04

and Revit.

00:05

HVAC analysis requires work with the full volume of 3D spaces.

00:11

In this video, we're going to review the existing spaces

00:15

and change the height of spaces as needed.

00:19

I'm working in the small Medical Center building in the O1

00:23

ground floor space plan.

00:25

You can see that a half space is applied to each room

00:28

as well as for chassis that can be seen in this plan view.

00:33

First, I need to verify that the system is

00:35

calculating the volume.

00:37

In the Analyze tab, I'm expanding the Spaces and Zones

00:41

panel title, and selecting Area and Volume Computations.

00:46

And the dialog box, I need to verify that Areas and Volumes

00:51

is selected.

00:52

And then I can click OK.

00:57

Now, I'm ready to make sure that all the spaces have

01:00

the correct volume.

01:02

I'm going to open the section running horizontally

01:05

through the building by double clicking on its arrow.

01:07

By default, spaces do not display in sections.

01:11

This section was previously set up

01:13

in the visibility override graphics dialog box

01:16

to show the spaces.

01:18

Now, there are some areas between the floors

01:20

where we need to add spaces.

01:22

But we're going to cover this in a later video on plenums.

01:26

To help us identify what we're working on,

01:28

I'm going to tag all the spaces in this section.

01:32

In the Annotate Tag panel, I'm going to click Tag All,

01:37

select Space Tags, and click OK.

01:41

Now, we can see that most of the spaces extend from the level

01:45

where they were placed to the ceiling of the room

01:47

that they are in.

01:49

Some spaces aren't quite tall enough,

01:51

such as upper lobby on the right.

01:54

And some aren't low enough, such as a pharmacy here on the left.

01:58

An easy way to fix the spaces is to use Controls.

02:04

So I'm going to select the upper lobby space

02:06

and drag the Control up.

02:09

It's OK to be higher than the building elements

02:12

because they are room bounding, and the ceilings and roof

02:16

will stop it.

02:18

Now, I'm going to select the pharmacy space.

02:22

Use the Control and drag it down.

02:26

And you can see that it stops the floor because the floor is

02:29

a room bounding element.

02:32

Now, I might want to be more precise about how far I'm

02:35

dragging these things.

02:36

So instead of using the Control, I

02:39

can actually change it in Properties.

02:41

You can see that it's set up so that the level is

02:45

on ground floor, and I have an upper limit and limit offset.

02:49

But I also have a base offset.

02:52

And I'm going to set that to negative 2 feet.

02:55

So that's precisely now right at the base of the floor.

02:59

I also want to do this to the other two rooms beside it.

03:02

So I'm going to select this space and that one.

03:07

Change the base offset to negative 2.

03:11

And these also extend to the room bounding

03:14

objects in those spaces.

03:16

Now, I know that these aren't the only spaces

03:18

I need to evaluate.

03:20

So what I want to do next is tile the two views.

03:25

I have my O1 ground floor plan and my space section open.

03:31

I'm going to click Space Section and type WT.

03:35

And that opens the two views in tiled mode.

03:39

I'm going to zoom in on the outpatient center.

03:42

I'm going to first work on that area.

03:46

So I can see that in both plan view.

03:49

And I'm going to just drag the section up so I see

03:52

another part of the plan view.

03:55

You might see this warning, there's

03:57

a space tag that's not visible.

03:59

I'm moving it to the space, so it's in good place now.

04:03

So just like the spaces in the rest of the outpatient center,

04:07

these are not low enough.

04:08

I happen to know that this is going

04:10

to be true for all of the spaces in the side.

04:12

They are down a few feet from the rest of the building.

04:16

So I'm going to select all of those spaces, use my filter,

04:22

check Done, select Only Spaces.

04:25

And now, I can go into properties

04:28

and change that base offset for all the spaces to negative 2.

04:36

I'm curious about one room, the staff bathroom,

04:40

because it looks like it's actually in the main building.

04:43

So I'm going to move the section up to that little area there.

04:48

And then I can see that, sure enough,

04:50

here it is the staff bathroom.

04:52

And it stops at the floor because the floor

04:56

is a room bounding object.

04:58

And so even though I have a base offset that's lower,

05:01

it's ignoring that and stopping at the floor.

05:05

Now, let's take a look at the lobby end of the building.

05:10

A lot is going on in here as you can see.

05:14

I want to move the section through this part

05:17

of the building as well.

05:18

So I'm going to start here at the front of the building.

05:21

I've already made my upper lobby, the right height,

05:24

though there is an issue here.

05:26

We'll deal with that in the next video.

05:28

But my lobby, the lower lobby in this case,

05:31

I want that to extend up to the second floor.

05:34

I could use a Control, but it's probably safer

05:38

to come over and change my upper limit no longer to ground floor

05:42

with the limit offset, but to actually specify

05:45

second floor and no limit offset.

05:52

That way, the lobby touches the upper lobby space, which

05:56

is important for our HVAC.

06:01

I'm going to move the section again through the elevator

06:05

this time.

06:09

And again, just going to move a space tag to the space.

06:12

And you can see now, when I look at that, the elevator itself

06:16

has been already expanded.

06:18

So it's in the right space.

06:20

And we've got some plenum spaces will need to deal with later.

06:24

But over here, I have a chase on the lower floor and a space

06:28

on the second in this angled area.

06:31

So I'm just deleting the space on the second floor,

06:35

coming in, assigning this now to atrium roof

06:38

with no limit offset.

06:40

And my chase is filling that space.

06:43

So it's an important thing to check all of these spaces.

06:47

Now, finally, I'm going to come in to the reception area.

06:50

My reception area was the same as the other lobby.

06:53

I want that to be second floor, limit offset of 0.

06:58

And now, I'm ready to do a few more

07:01

things that will help make this particular space more accurate.
