Welcome back to our presentation called The Difference Between PDM and PLM, and why you need both.
00:15
My name is Klaus Loerincz and I'm a Senior Implementation Consultant with Autodesk,
00:20
and it will be my pleasure to guide you through this presentation.
00:23
I work with our customers mainly focusing on Product Data Management,
00:27
often referred to as PDM,
00:29
and Product Lifecycle Management, often referred to as PLM.
00:33
With 15 plus years of industry experience,
00:36
I like to work with our customers and their requirements, both from a product and a process point of view.
00:43
With Part 3,
00:44
we will concentrate on the PLM topic and display customer examples where Vault is in use as the PDM solution.
00:55
Okay.
00:56
So we've covered a lot about PDM in our Part 2 of the presentation series.
01:02
PLM, this is the fun part.
01:05
Vault PDM is managing your data.
01:07
But now what?
01:09
Where do the new ideas come from?
01:12
How do you manage change and quality?
01:15
How are you managing your suppliers?
01:18
This is where PLM comes in.
01:20
You may not realize it, but you are already doing PLM in one way or the other.
01:26
You have processes, but could they be easier, faster, or more formalized?
01:36
How do you get information from engineering to the rest of your business that needs it?
01:43
Could there be a better way?
01:45
I'll show you how PLM can help.
01:49
We'll take a look at process management and enterprise integration.
01:57
So why is process management important?
02:01
The reason you implement the PLM system for process management,
02:05
is to make sure that everything is documented and accessible in a central system.
02:11
It gives you Collaboration across divisions and business systems.
02:17
You're probably doing all of these steps.
02:20
But there are bottlenecks that happen from manual processes.
02:24
Time is being wasted, extra costs are incurred, and quality is jeopardized.
02:30
There are easier ways to do them that will free you up to do work that adds more value,
02:37
so you aren't waiting for someone and you can have an audit trail.
02:43
You know why things were done, why a change was made,
02:47
which supplier provided a part that failed,
02:51
or which supplier provides a part that is reused across multiple products because it is the best part for the job,
03:00
you know how much the part costs, and so on.
03:06
Having this in a formalized PLM system lets people know why a change request was initiated for example,
03:14
due to a problem report which caused a change order and the supplier alert to a quality issue in a part they supplied.
03:26
What this means for Autodesk customers is that you can go from using Vault PDM to manage your data to using Vault PLM,
03:35
which adds process management to your environment.
03:38
So you can do more with that data,
03:42
collaboration for all involved in the product lifecycle from engineering and supply chain to quality and manufacturing,
03:51
everyone working from a central source of information.
03:57
Vault PLM removes bottlenecks by automating task notifications to stakeholders.
04:03
You can have a rich history of all your change orders documented in the system for traceability and supplier management.
04:10
You can have real time status reporting without the need to manually manage Excel tables or charts.
04:18
Teams can find the information they need at their fingertips rather than spending non-value time,
04:25
emailing someone to hunt it down for them.
04:32
So let's break down what PLM does for you as an organization.
04:37
Before, I had already covered how we can manage product data,
04:41
and that's one central location and that's Vault.
04:45
Vault has all of your designs and your engineering BOMs, and then speeding up the product development and business processes,
04:55
the approvals, the steps that products go from through design, through manufacturing.
05:02
We can put it in a time-saving process tailored to a company's particular workflow.
05:09
And then we can extend that value downstream to other departments and integrations with other enterprise business systems.
05:21
Autodesk Vault PLM gives you what you see at the top,
05:25
the pillars of core PLM functionality.
05:29
But there's more.
05:30
Keep in mind that you could extend this.
05:33
But for what we would say is out-of-the-box,
05:37
what it does right away that you can realize an almost instant return on investment are these core functionalities.
05:45
Rather than teams operating separately,
05:48
and asking for the same information through email or spreadsheets that are only accessible by one department,
05:55
the walls come down and the value of your product data can be used beyond PDM,
06:02
beyond engineering for new product introduction is, for instance, a pretty big one.
06:08
The second is enterprise bill of materials management.
06:13
Supplier collaboration is a natural fit to this because of the architecture.
06:19
And of course change management because change happens all the time.
06:24
And quality management which is tied to change management as well.
06:28
PLM gets information out to other departments,
06:32
and roles involved in the product lifecycle through process management and integration with your other business systems.
06:42
But just to review Autodesk Vault PLM, it is online, your PLM runs completely in the cloud.
06:50
The access is any time, anywhere.
06:54
The user interface being that we run inside a browser with PLM.
06:60
This means it's easy to go and adopt. It's easy to roll out to your teams.
07:06
We also have an app store.
07:08
We have an online app store within PLM that allows us to go and download and integrate additional functionality,
07:16
and additional tools and templates that help us get our job done.
07:22
We will cover the PLM topic in a separate presentation,
07:25
where we can better focus on the advantages as this will take a bit longer to explain.
07:31
Let's take a look at a customer that has taken advantage of Vault and PLM working together.
07:38
Hosokawa Micron is a world leader in providing process solutions in the field of powder,
07:44
and practical processing technology and blown film technology.
07:50
They were founded in Japan and have facilities across six continents.
07:55
The equipment they sell is used to produce materials like coffee, cereal, icing, and medicine tablets.
08:05
This is a company that was using Vault for their product data management.
08:09
And then they adopted Fusion Lifecycle PLM to handle the rest of the process of everything that happens downstream.
08:19
Document control and change management were major challenges in Hosokawa's business.
08:25
They once described a horror story situation of sending a drawing to manufacturing,
08:31
changing the drawing the next day and then getting equipment manufactured to the wrong drawing weeks later.
08:39
That's just one reason why they use PDM and PLM today to manage documentation and downstream processes.
08:48
Now they have full visibility into who's working on a document and where it is in the system.
08:54
They have greater control over their product development process.
09:01
Let's take another look at a customer that has taken advantage of Vault and several CAD tools working together.
09:08
Founded at RWTH Aachen University,
09:12
e.Go produces electric vehicles connected with key research hub for factory planning.
09:19
Traditional factory layouts are based into the common issues include little consideration for data related to building,
09:26
MEP engineering, and infrastructure.
09:30
The goal was to strategically integrate various disciplines and build a factory that could deliver real value for years to come.
09:40
Technical experts from Autodesk were brought on to the project to tailor adoption of an Autodesk toolset,
09:46
that fed into one integrated factory model.
09:50
The integrated factory data is successfully stored in Vault, as all participating technologies have an existing Vault interface available.
10:00
That saves a lot of money and a lot of time for the company.
10:11
We have been talking about the importance of PDM to control engineering and production data.
10:18
We've looked at going from PDM to PLM and extending the reach of data produced by the engineering department.
10:26
We talked about quality and costs,
10:29
and I hope that through this, you understand a bit about the difference between PLM and PDM,
10:37
and it's not an either/or, it's an and.
10:42
So PDM combined with PLM will help you get your products out to market faster,
10:48
improve the quality, and ultimately reduce time and costs.
10:57
Thank you for listening in to the presentation series, and we hope that you found something in there you can use in your daily business.
