Associating CAD to an Existing Item

In this lesson, we look at how you can associate a CAD file to an item that already exists in Upchain. You may need to do this if a team member has already created the item as a guide for the overall structure of the assembly.

Before getting started:

You may want to work through some of the BOM management courses to learn or review how an item without CAD is created in the web application. However, doing so is not a requirement for this course.

Associating a CAD file with an existing item

In this video, we’ll show you how you can take a CAD file and register it to an existing item in Upchain that doesn't already have CAD.

Key takeaways

  1. You can use the CAD plugin to associate a CAD file to an existing item in Upchain as long as it does not have CAD already.
  2. You can use either the Find item function from the cBOM view or the Attach active CAD from the Project BOM to accomplish this.
  3. These functions do not register any child components to items and leaves them as phantom.
