BAM Ireland improves quality and safety by 20% using BIM 360 and Construction IQ

Overview

One of the top ten construction businesses across Europe, Royal BAM Group is honored to focus on close client collaboration, sustainability, and digital construction. The innovative firm began as a small carpentry workshop in 1869, and now delivers projects across the globe. Royal BAM Group’s focus remains on the important impact its work can have on people’s lives.

Royal BAM Group’s adoption of digital construction solutions is an ongoing journey that has spanned several years. Though BAM was an early adopter of construction software, BAM Ireland found that in many cases teams were still using paper for data collection. These manual workflows were slow, time consuming, and burdensome. To improve data collection and better utilize the information gathered, BAM Ireland piloted the adoption of Autodesk® BIM 360® Insight and Construction IQ. With these solutions, the team in Ireland reduced both quality and safety issues – creating a better working environment and an improved data collection process.

Challenge

BAM Ireland’s traditional data management methods for construction projects relied on paper-based methods. Teams collected dozens of racks of papers and files, all containing valuable project data. Compiling this information in a digestible way was time-consuming, which meant that good data wasn’t being used to its full potential. Often, BAM Ireland had between 40 and 50 projects live at any given time, and data collection and management became a daunting task.

The amount of information and data sets that BAM Ireland had access to was increasing – creating a situation that was both a blessing and a challenge. The team needed a way to manage this data that could keep pace with the growing levels of valuable project information. In addition, new projects were being committed to start, with new data coming on stream. BAM Ireland recognized it had a valuable opportunity to digitize its processes. As part of a global effort to create standardization across Royal BAM Group, the team in Ireland began looking for key solutions that would optimize project data from start to finish.

Solution

BAM Ireland began using Insight and Construction IQ to capture data and manage construction work on all levels, starting with Museum of the Future in Dubai and seven Court House projects, under a Public-Private Partnership, across Ireland. The IQ software went beyond showing BAM Ireland the existence of mere inconsistencies, but also why they occurred in the first place.

BAM Ireland found that many checklist issues on the construction sites were late. In many cases, this was due to a lack of digital adoption on site rather than the lists not being completed. This revealed that while BAM Ireland had cutting edge digital processes already in place, its adoption needed to improve. The team now had a clear vision for the next steps.

With Insight and Construction IQ running, BAM Ireland created a machine learning environment to manage its data. The increased project information could be managed in an automated system, and the system could adapt to new data sets that required changes or new ways of organizing. The machine learning platform also had the ability to asses site risk and provide information that made the BAM Ireland team more adaptable. Construction IQ assisted BAM with breaking down traditional knowledge silo’s that exist within the construction industry. IQ automatically identified high-risk items through machine learning, assisted by human experience.

“Safety is number one. Once we have safety in place, the next thing is to ensure we add value. Having our site engineers out on site with good and accurate information is where we earn money by adding value. I think as long as we can support that process, then those are key metrics for us. Everything else supports that.”

Success

With Construction IQ, BAM Ireland achieved a 20 percent improvement in quality and safety on site with the added capacity to make better decisions supported by the solutions. Management now has an easily accessible, cross-project dashboard that improves oversight across multiple complex projects. This level of oversight means that sites who are using the solutions in unique ways are easily communicating these achievements to management.

Data capture techniques have drastically improved by making the workflow 95 percent digital – significantly reducing paper usage to only mandatory, legal documents. BAM Ireland’s project staff now spends 25 percent more of its time focusing on tasks and risk items through the use of Construction IQ. Spending more time in the field on safety items means significantly reducing the risk for the entire project lifecycle. The platform further assists with a better understanding of the risk profile that Royal BAM Group carries on a daily basis across the globe. Having these new health and safety processes and understandings creates a safer and happier worksite for all employees, improving productivity and morale.

BAM Ireland’s adoption of Insight and Construction IQ demonstrates how the rest of Royal BAM Group can track its digital journey. As an organization committed to success through innovation, easily demonstrating the wins from digitizing construction is incredibly valuable.

“Autodesk construction solutions give us visibility on risk and a higher degree of focus. Insight is identifying the problems and constraints that now act as leading KPIs for BAM to identify hotspots, rather than relying on traditional construction intuition. We’re having less reactive conversations with more emphasis on KPIs that can drive continual improvement. The simple visualization of the challenge or the issue alone helps us bring that focus.”
